Faulkner County is named after Sandy Faulkner, the original “Arkansaw Traveler,” Faulkner County was established on April 12, 1873, by an act of the State Legislature, incorporating parts of Conway and Pulaski counties. The designated boundaries formed a new county named Faulkner, with Conway Station as the temporary county seat. Commissioners A. D. Thomas, A. F. Livingston, and J. F. Comstock were appointed to locate the county seat, procure the site, and manage the sale of lots to fund public buildings.

Governor Elisha Baxter appointed Hon. E. L. Allen, M. R. Sevier, and A. J. Horton to the board of commissioners, which convened on May 5, 1873, to organize the court. E. L. Allen was elected president, with C. H. Lander as clerk and Benter Turner as sheriff. The court subdivided the county into thirteen road districts and appointed overseers.

Col. A. P. Robinson, who laid out the town of Conway, donated the square for the public buildings on September 19, 1873. Without initial funds, the county rented office spaces and temporarily used the Methodist Church as a courtroom. In 1877, Contractor R. H. Watterman built a two-story wooden courthouse, and a log jail was constructed on the public square. The courthouse includes a fire-proof vault for records.

An act on December 7, 1875, adjusted the county’s boundaries: parts of Township 4 north, Range 11 west, were transferred to Pulaski County, and areas between the Arkansas River and Palarm Creek were added to Faulkner County.
