Aleshire Cemetery, Shady, Arkansas

Location & Information

The directions and information pertaining to this cemetery was given by Mary Lee Aleshire Andrews and Charley Aleshire of Cove, Arkansas. Because the two graves, located on the old homestead of J. S. Aleshire, are not marked some specific directions have been given for the purpose of preserving a record of this cemetery’s location.

On the land that J. S. Aleshire homesteaded in the middle 1800’s.
Section 7, Township 4 South, Range 28 West
Not Listed on the Polk County Arkansas Tax Roll

From Mena follow Highway 8 East to Highway 375; turn onto Highway 375 and follow it to Shady. At the fire station continue on for five and one-half miles east; turn south on an old Conservation Corp Road towards the Bard Springs Recreation Area; go over Nichols Mountain; cross Sugar Creek (a concrete bridge); go to the top of the hill to the first crossroad, turn left (east) and go between one-half and three-quarters of a mile; cross Sugar Creek again. You have now reached the land that J. S. Aleshire homesteaded in the middle 1800’s.

As of January 12, 1984, there were two big walnut trees growing near the old house place. The two graves are located in an old field, across Sugar Creek, about one-fourth mile south of the old house place.

Crosby’s father was J. S. Aleshire, his mother was Hannah Shewmake Aleshire and Dora Aleshire Thornton was his half-sister. Crosby and Dora were an uncle and aunt of Charley’s. They were buried in this location, because at the time of their deaths, the creeks were “up” and they could not be taken to a public cemetery for their burial.
